Antique Silver Indian Repousse Chased Card Tray.
This is a beautifully handcrafted silver ornate card tray, adorned with stunning decorations of scrolled foliage, elephants, and pheasant birds. Inspired by Victorian silverware designs, this tray was likely made in India during the British Colonial period. It was originally used as a calling card tray, placed in the entrance hall to announce one’s arrival. Today, this exquisite tray can be used to display your favourite jewellery pieces, business cards, or can simply serve as a striking standalone piece on a coffee table. It is also perfect as a wedding card tray announcement on the entrance table.
The design features a repousse and chased technique, resulting in a raised, embellished pattern. The underside of the tray also showcases this fine craftsmanship. Although the silversmith maker is unknown, the design is very characteristic of Kutch, India. There are no silver hallmarks present, which is typical for Indian silver from this period.
The date, origin, and composition of the tray have been inferred from its pattern and decorative features, as well as current testing methods. It is made of 800-grade silver, which has been verified by a gemologist and jewellery valuer, along with a subsequent acid test.
An exceptional piece of rare antique Indian silver, which is increasingly becoming more difficult to source. Both highly collectible and sought after, this silver tray is reminiscent of a bygone era rich in history.
